Throat irritation??

Bailey has been licking/swallowing almost compulsively lately. We thought it might be because we changed her food, but we changed back, and it's still going on.

She'll just sit for what seems like hours, but a long time for her to sit, and lick the air/her muzzle/whatever. It's really irritating, but I can't figure out why she's doing it. I've tried giving her a little olive oil, tried some molasses thinking maybe she had a hairball... Nothing works. She's never out of water, and she drinks like 2 gallons a day, which is normal for her. She's getting plenty of exercise and food and whatnot. There is no change in any of her behavior except the swallowing/licking, and it doesn't seem to be slowing her down at all.

I'm pretty seriously thinking of taking her to the vet tomorrow to see if she's got something stuck in her throat, but I thought I'd get some opinions from you all while the vet is closed.

I am not sure what it could be. Check this out, not sure if thtis is what you are describing, but it is Tonsillitis in Dogs.

Hope it is nothing serious. I would call the vet once they are open to see.

My parents' English Setter had this last spring and then again this spring. He was diagnosed with a respiratory infection, but we seemed to see it flare up after a jaunt through the field or the woods. His eyes would get all runny. Personal opinion for him was that it was allergies. The vet gave him some medicine, and it cleared up... but now the pine pollen here is outrageous and he's started hacking a little again.

Maybe Bailey has allergies??

Hugs to her!

Well, I don't think it's tonsilitis. Someone suggested to me that she may have something stuck in her mouth... So I opened her mouth again, wider, and it all looks good and happy in there.

I'd almost have to agree with the respiratory infection possibility though. She was wheezing a little last night, though she seems to be fine this morning, she hasn't done anything more strenuous than standing up yet.

My thoughts also were something in the throat or mouth. Maybe too far for you to see? Did you look under her tongue?

I didn't think to look under her tongue. She's not real pleased with me holding her mouth open... (Nor am I, with her breath) I'll go look again.

Well, she won't let me have her tongue, but what I can see under it is fine. It could be something I can't see.

Of course, now that I've started asking people about it, she seems to have quit doing it.

Jenna and Rudy both do that when they have something stuck between their teeth.

Is it possible that there is something stuck in the roof of the dogs mouth ? Sounds like there is something in the mouth that is bother the dog and theya re trying to get it out.

It could be all that dandilion fluff we have right now. Both Dax and Ariel have been hacking more than usual but with no signs of infection.

She's not coughing though. Just licking. Seems to have stopped though, or at least slowed down.

I did remember that I put some of those Hartz flea drops on her around the time it started... Don't think I'll be doing that again, just in case.
