Any Ideas?

On how to make a dog stop vomitting in your car? He is a 2yr old dog that I got from the pound and on our first trip home he did 2 really big stinkers in my car. I just thought it was nerves, new car and new people, but everytime he gets in my car he starts panting, so i have all the windows down with the aircond on to try and cool him as he doesnt want to sit down, and when we get to the final destination there is a lovely pile of vomit just staring at me. He likes to jump in the car so I dont think he is scared of it. I just dont have the stomache in me to keep cleaning it up as I vomit as much as the dog has, lol!

Car sickness.

Try driving for short periods of time with someone in the back with him rewarding calm behaviour. Slowly build up the time of each trip. Having the dog sitting or in a down helps alot. Frequent but short trips are better then rarely and long trips as far as overcoming car sickness.

Good luck

Thanks, I try and take him out everyday just 10mins or so, but thats still enough for him to stress and vomit. I talk to him all the time, but Im gonna have to get my partner to drive the car while I sit in the back and talk to him. Thanks for that. One of my friends told me to try ginger biscuits. Apparantly it seems to settle the stomache. Ever heard of that?

Ginger is supporsed to help. I know that if I'm nauseated I drink Ginger Ale and it helps. Candied ginger you can just by at a grocery store is supposed to be good. Just the the dog eat a couple pieces.

first off if you are going on a long trip,don't feed him the nite before,nothing after noon....and if its to get him prepared for the trips do little trips with him...short ones,start with a 3 minute trip and when that goes well then go to a 5 and so on...My doberman was the same way and this worked for me...

Treatment: give Dramamine by mouth about an hour before leaving. I was unable to find the dosage amounts. Tranvet is a good tranquilizer for long trips. {source Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook by D Carlson DVM & J Giffin MD}

Many pups get car sick. Some tricks that have helped me is to not travel within an hour of eating. Have windows open so lots of fresh air. Travel when cooler or use air conditioning. Let dog look out the window (forward only). Drive around the block (2 minutes) and gradually work on longer times.

Try to make it as normal of an event as possible. If you are nervous or excited, your dog will become that way too. All my dogs have outgrown car sickness within a couple of months of exposure. The more often - the faster the transition.

Thanx will try that, poor bugga, he had a ride this morn strait to the vets to be desexed, so I can imagine the boy wont want to go in the car for awhile after that. lol. Dax, thanx for what you said, I do try and make it fun but maybe Im tryin a little to hard and getting him more worked up than I should. I will try and put him in the car and just talk to him in a nice even tone and see if that helps. Thanx again.

Also Vets can prescibe a medication for motion sickness. Called Acepromazine.

But.. some dogs are just not car friendly.

My Grandma's beagle has/had the same problem. She would just sit with him in the car for a little while, and not actually drive anywhere. Then once they got a second dog, he very rarely does it anymore. Good Luck!
