Fur (or lack of) update!

Well, Poppy has finished her antibiotics and her skin is looking quite pink again (it turned a very nasty dark colour) however, her fur still continues to fall out...

It is starting to grow back on her legs (where I first noticed it falling out) and what fur she does have looks really nice but she is still losing it on her back. It's difficult to describe but she appears to be losing it in "waves" down her back. It started at her neck, then that started growing back, then she lost another "wave" a little bit further down, then another bit further down... she now has about 6 "waves" of fur loss on her back... I gave her a bath yesterday and you should have seen how much hair came out - I could have stuffed a cushion - LOL

My mother-in-law has a theory that she has to lose all her fur before it will all look good again! Poppy has another 4.5 weeks left on the coat enhancing tablets then she's back to the vets again. If she's still not right then they will start tests. Thankfully the insurance has said that these will be covered but I'm hoping she's going to be fine and the tests won't be required.

Anyway, given the fact that you can see her skin in some places does anybody know if I should cover her with sunscreen whilst we're on holiday? I mean can dogs get surnburn???

If her skin is sensitive, it might react again. I would try a small patch and leave it on for 24 hours. Look for any redness or other signs. Then you could mix with water in a spray bottle to apply if in the sun for long periods of time.

I would go for keeping her in the shade if possible.

Poor baby... not a good hair day.

We do try to keep her in the shade as much as possible - you know the raised bed I told you about - well that has a sun canopy for when we're in the garden. Perhaps she should wear her coat - LOL.

Yes, I would p-ut some baby sunblock on her exposed skin. Be sure to reapply after a while and after any swimming. Also, I would check her antibiotics, even though she is "done" there still may be some in her system, and some antibiotics can make a dog (or person!!) extra photosensitive.

Hugs to Poppy!!

OK, got some baby sunblock, packed in her bag and ready to go but at the rate her fur is growing back she might not need it at the weekend.

Weim, she's not allowed to swim anymore - that's what caused the infection in the first place!
