Foods

I know this is a common subject, and also a subject that not everyone agrees on.
I'm wondering what kinds(brands) of dog food are high(or at least good) quality and REASONABLY priced. Right now Rudy is eating Purina dog chow (I know, it's not that great). Also, what brands make a weight control formula? Rudy is on the hefty side and so far exericise alone isn't changing that(he's fed according to the instructions on the bag). I want Rudy to get to a healthy weight now, so he can enjoy being young (well 7 years young...), and live a heathier life than if he'd be overweight.

I know the one I get Poppy is a good brand but you can't get it in the US so I can't advise you from my perspective - sorry. I'm sure other members will be able to help though...

I use it on every dog I have, whether they are skinny (then I give them more), fat (they get less), working, pregnant, puppies, boarders, etc. Do you time feed or let him free feed? That's going to make a difference in how you control his weight too. As for the purina...yes, it isn't a very good food...lots of corn in it, hence the reason for the yellow stools. He eats a lot of it and gets little to nothing out of it...kind of like a candy bar to us. Check out that website and let me know what you think...it's not bad priced either...$30 for 40#. The best part is that they don't need as much of it because everything they eat, they use and there is very little waste. I know, I go through 80-100#s a week!

Country-Side Br, I'll look into that food, it's always nice to know that other people have had good luck with foods before trying it.
Rudy is fed 2 times a day, and only a certain amount in all. If I remember right he gets about 2 2/3 cups in his 2 meals(can't remember since we use a jar with the food line marked so it doesn't change). Actually I don't think I've seen yellow stools from Rudy, maybe he's use to the food or something.

Is CANIDAE sold in stores, like Pet expo?

Other ideas are welcome, it's always nice to know what's out there before making the final decision.

I just switched from Nutro to Eagle Pack. My dogs like both foods, I think their coats are looking better on the Eagle Pack.
Nutro is a good food and reasonably priced, the Eagle Pack is a bit higher quality, and also a bit higher priced.
I know Nutro has a weight control, I think Eagle Pack does also. Most brands DO have weight control. It seems 22/3 cups twice a day is a little much. Clifford gets 2 cups twice a day, and he is a young active boy!

ayl715 is on a distinguished road
When my dogs need to lose a few lbs, I give them California Natural low calorie.
Other times they eat Innova or Canidea. These are all very good kibble.

If you switch to Canidae, Rudy will only need 1 1/2 cups a day, total. If you'd like to lose some weight off of him, then you just cut back his amount of food (say to 1 cup/day) and get him some more excercise.

On the website, there is a store locator...enter your zip code or area code and it'll give you the names and locations of where to buy it.

Thanks everyone, next time I go to Pet Expo I'll compare brands(if they have all of them), and the prices of the foods.
