Question At what point can you determine a puppy's eye color?

I was talking to Borzoi Mom recently about this when I was talking about how the puppies had began to open their eyes. And it was in chat, so I couldn't get back to the convo... so here I am!

And of course now that they're wide open... I want to know how is it that you determine the color of a pup's eyes?

Right now I got about 2 pups who have one lighter blue eye & one darker blue eye... Does that mean these pups will have bi colored eyes?

I remember when a friend of mine got a pup a two years ago ... the pup was 7/8 Border Collie and 1/8 Blue Heeler... and I recall how her eyes were this deep blue that started to darken up (or gradually changed) to brown as she got older.

So does that mean if the eyes are a darker blue - more than likely their eyes will be brown?

And if the eyes are a light shade of blue - will their eyes be a clear blue?

It's hard to say. Some will be obvious earlier on and others will shift in color over the next several months, kinda like us.

To me, unless VERY dark, they tend to keep that blueish look until after 6 weeks but are generally set by 4 months.

Fiona has blue eyes, and now that I look back I can see them pretty early. I'll show you.. The first pic is Fiona and the second is one of her littermates at the same age to show the comparison.

Not before I steal her ! She is so dang pretty!

And it is very well possible you could get puppies with different eyes, not 100% sure how the blue eye gene goes though. One of my brothers friends had a husky/shepherd/smidgen of lab mix with one blue eye and one amber eye.

You could tell Remmy was going to have blue eyes when he was three weeks old.
