I'm getting a Boston Terrier male puppy in 4 weeks, and I'm starting to research potty training. I read one book that says to begin having the dog potty on newspaper next to the door he'll be going out to eventually potty. Once he masters the newspaper, then start going outside. But then I've read it's not wise to use newspapers because it teaches the dog it's okay to go potty in the house. I want to train my dog to use both newspaper in house (when we're not home and he has to relieve himself) and potty outside. How do I do this? Thanks for your help!!!!

The problem with the newspaper is during the times you are at home he will not let you know he has to go, because he will naturally use the newspaper. I have found the newspaper really good with tiny little pups, especially if it is too cold outside, but eventually I have had to teach them to go outside then remove the paper altogether. Unfortunately you will not be able to teach both, you will have accidents all the time on the newspaper. Can you install a doggy door so there is access to outside when you are not home.

I don't think of going on newspaper as mastering anything. It is a simple - I have to go NOW!.

I still think crate training is the best option in the long run and having it never be ok to pee in the house. Will you have someone around who can let them out every 3-4 hours during the day or will the pup be locked up in the kitchen 8-10 hours while you're at work. If the later, then the kitchen is more humane but the mess will be bigger.

well, get some newspaper and hold it down with logs/rocks outside. ur dog will know to pee on the paper so will get used to going outside.
