Huskies having a double coat, are now blowing their thick undercoat. One thing that may help is to give them a bath with quite warm water and a good dog shampoo. This will help to loosen the under coat. Then when mostly dry, use a comb or slicker brush, (a good quality helps), and starting at the head, comb or brush foward, placing your free hand on the coat and place the brush by your hand and pull forward - doing about 2 to 3 inches at a time, and you should be able to see the skin as it parts where your free hand is holding down the other fur. Then move your free hand down an inch or 2 and do the same thing. Inching your way to the tail end of your dog, doing the complete body, tummy, legs and tail. It is a big job, but this will get out all or most of the heavy winter under coat, and save you time and frustration in the long run.
A rule for these double coated dogs: Never brush them dry. Use a spray bottle to dampen the coat each time you brush them, and always brush foward. This fluffs the coat and makes them look beautiful. |

A lot of people around here shave them. Not a clean shave but leaving about an inch of hair. It's not as pretty as their natural coat, but if done by someone who knows what they're doing, it can be very beautiful.

Thanks alot.I always try and get him wet before,it seems to help bring the lower coat up to the top.I have often wondered about shaving but never got brave enough on my own.It will be something to think about as well.
Again,Thanks!!! |

I'd advise against shaving - this will (most likely) cause the coat to grow is much thicker - wispy, cottony coat that is extremely hard to brush out.
Shaving will also take away your dog's protection from the elements, including sun and heat - the double coat insulates the dog from the summer heat. |

Put some regular vegetable oil in his/her food. This reduces dry skin which can often result in excessesive shedding. Also how often do you bathe him/her?Bathing too much results in overly dry skin.I advise against shaving as some dogs after being shaved(particularly huskies)tend to feel as though they are not as pretty and special as they used to be and they loose thier how do you say...spunk.
