Is this your first dog?. I suggest formal classes with a trainer & you.
They are quite a high energy dog so getting his attention maybe part of the problem. What you could try is to not feed him his evening meal in a bowl. Instead have it in your hand and use it as a lure. The stomach is mightier than than the ego. Work on only one command at a time for 5-10 minutes per day. Gradually increase time and once he properly completes one command - add a new one. Make it a game so he keeps interested. |

I don't have a ton of experiance with jack russells, but the ones I knew LOVED to playwith my puppy. It seems that Jackstake much longer to potty train, and just train in general. So I'd say yes, difficult to train. But my puppy is 7 months and is still far to entergetic to pay attention to everything she's learned in her classes. So, take an active dog and make it into a growing puppy. Wow.

Just read the quote. I wasn't trying to be rude with the "FIRST DOG" question and maybe should have asked how many dogs you've previously had. Sorry.. but my recommendation for training classess and food lures stand.

A Jack russel is no more difficult to train than any other dog of such an intelligent breed.
They are a hunting dog, so instinctively wish to go into holes searching for foxes, many like to chase rabbits and rats. A highly energetic dog, who can become a bit nippy. At 12 weeks you are expecting a lot, the basics of toilet training only just being covered. Give this little guy a chance. By the time he is 4 months, a sit would be expected, then the come command, you are trying to achieve too much, too soon. Slow down a little, one thing at a time, he is still only a baby. |

Jack russells (like most terriers) are notoriously stubborn and difficult to train. They are smart enough (although no where near as smart as say a border collie) but are bred for resiliance not obediance. You have your work cut out - especially with the recall, thats typically their "worst" command.
