I've heard that this is actually better for them rather than store bought dog food because dogs are closely related to wolves. What's your opinion?

Even wolves aren't true carnivores. Coyotes for example eat a lot of berries, wolves eat the stomach contents of their prey plus grasses, etc.

If you are interested in alternatives to commerical foods, I would recommend searching the term RAW here and reading the numerous posts on the subject.

When I was younger, we had adopted a retired grayhound, and for anyone who doesn't know, they're fed raw meat all the time...well as it turns out, raw meat isn't that great for dogs teeth...I personally don't feed my dog any raw meat, only cooked, but Hewey, our grayhound had to have between 7-10 teeth removed...not very fun. He was always in a lot of pain and the doggy dentist said that's the reason why.

Yes it is ok. But one suggestion, do it slowly, don't just go heave ho into it, until they are use to eating RAW.

I feed RAW and have been for years, our dogs are healthy and happy. They look great !

If you want more info , feel free to ask.

Please discuss the change with your vet before doing it. Raw can be extremely dangerous to both you and your dog. You'll also need to supplement since raw meat is not sufficient alone. Dogs are not like wolves any longer- wolves are omnivores also, but we've domesticated and bred them into a whole new species with different requirements. We don't live as apes do any longer, either.

I have to disagree... You will never find a vet that actually encourages people to feed raw. But that doesn't mean it's not possible and totally safe, if you follow the BARF diet.

Fran I have to disagree with you. I jave and do now have a vet that does recomend RAW for my dog. It was however recomended to me at first by my dog breeder and afetr doing tons of research, reading books and so on and so forth and talking to my vet, vets on forums ( not this one ) , there are many vets that believe in a RAW diet and also recomend it. My dogs are proof it is a healthy alternative.

Dogs are very similar to wolves and coyotes. They can and do thrive on a BARF diet. if fed correctly. that is the key. Do the research and you will see. You can trace the orgin or dogs to wolves.

I have posted many links on the subject, if you like I post them again but all you need to do is search the forums for RAW Feeding and BARF.
