The Beginning of the German Shepherd Dog
The German Shepherd emerged as a dog of Supreme Intelligence, Nobility and Usefulness with a sound mind in a sound body. Since the breeds intelligence and usefluness were of outmost important, Captain von Stephanitz (founder of the GSD)held obedience contests and herding trials. He also introduced the German Shepherd Dog to police officers, who welcomed the dogs when they found out how useful they were in apprehending criminals. In World War I, German Shepherds worked as messenger dogs, worked as guard and sentry dogs and alerted handlers to the presence of enemy soldiers. It was the breeds work with the Red Cross that earned the dogs international acclaim however. Numerous dogs searched for wounded soldiers and led Red Cross workers to them, saving thousands of lives. Unfortunatly the Nazi rise to power and Adolf Hitlers interest in the breed were the Captain's undoing.Hitlers favorite German Shepherd was Blondie, given to him by Martin Bormann in 1941. Blondie flew with Hitler in his FW-200 Condor and died with him in a bunker during the allied invasion. Captain von Stephanitz died in 1936 after the Nazis had taken the Club for German Shepherds away from him by threatning him with internment in a concentration camp. However, his memory lives on in a breed of dog reowned for its Beauty, Loyalty, Nobility, Intelligence, Temperament and Strong working instincts. Around the World the German Shepherds working ability spread around the world during and after World War I. The Whole World uses German Shepherds European countries imported the breed in great numbers and put it to work. African and South America countries, Japan and other far East countries also imported in numerous amounts. In France, they are used by guards and customs agents, especially in mountainous areas of the country. German Shepherds are used to track criminals, search for avalanche victimes or catch sumugglers. Belgium, Hollan and Sweden all use working German Shpeherds, used for avalanche search and resuce work that has been used around the world. The dogs are helicopter to avalanche sites, where they use thier keen sense of smell to find buried victims. Switzerland has a large number of German Shepherds in its police force, in fact the ratio is one dog per every three policmen. World War II the German Shepherd found its self working as a messenger, a guard and protector, a search and rescue dog and a police dog. On to the United States. American Soldiers returned to the US after World War I with tales of these wonderful dogs. Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart popularized the breed even more and everyone wanted a German Shepherd. Yeah, I guess German Shepherds really are a good dog. I mean they are still the most popular police dog, they help out in finding survivors and bodies after disasters, they are great service dogs and to think they've been doing this for years while Coton have . . . what been playing around in forest grabbing fruit out of poor innocent lemur's paws who have worked so hard to climb to the top to get the best fruit. And then Kirby comes and snatches it right out of their poor little paws. No, the German Shepherd would have made sure that the fruit went to the one who had worked hard to get it. They would have even helped out how they could to get the fruit for the poor starving lemur.
