hi guys,
this may sound like a dumb question, but can breeding a bitch permanately change her personality?? ie: make her gentler? jacs.

Now that depends on the bitch, some say that it will make her mellow, others say that there will be a change for a short while but when the pups are weaned that she will be her old self, My bitch is pregnant and she has had a major temperament change she is split up from the other dogs because she will go for them if they come near me. Before you breed from a bitch she needs to have a good temperament as she will pass along her temperament to her pups, so if you have a bitch with a bad temperament then don't breed from her to make her nice as this will not happen, and if you have a nice tempered bitch be prepared to see a bad side of her. Also other things need to be taken into account before breeding, along with temperament

im not breeding my bitch she's desexed. thankgod lol. i'm just checking up on advice i gave to someone else. app a vet told them it would mellow the bitch. i believe the bitch in question should be put down. she is extremly animal aggressive.

Well if she's aggressive then I certainly wouldn't breed from her. Sometimes there may be a change in personality but it wouldn't turn an agressive dog into a mellow one at all.
At the same time putting her down should be a very last resort. I'd suggest changing vets and then I would focus on training her (taking her to obedience school, getting an animal behaviourist etc) and then if that didn't work I'd look into re-homing her to someone who doesn't have any animals and is experienced with dogs. That's just my opinion though! It's also said that spaying a dog can make it more mellow (not to mention other positives - health wise etc) maybe you could talk the owner into getting that done instead??

this bitch is very aggressive...training may help...but rehoming her even to a home with no pets wouldnt be a good idea. what if she got out?...too late then.

Do you know why she is so aggressive? Abuse, neglect or illness? Have they considered bringing in a professional trainer or behaviorist?

Red face

i see what u guys are getting at and believe me i would never think of euthanasia as only option and maybe it isnt,, but i just have a gut feeling about this dog. like somthings not right about her. im not really familar with her background and i know the owners dont have the cash to consider a behaviorist. they got her when she was 2 yrs old and i dont think they know much either. i was only asking to check the advice i gave them which was i didnt think it was a good idea to breed her on the basis of behaviour change. there are so many neglected animals out there already. sorry if i offended anyone....

In my personal experience, having puppies can change a bitch's personality. ******* can suffer from a canine for of postpartum depression/agression. When I was ten I was bitten twice in about 2 minutes by a German Shepherd dog that had had her first littler of pups. I was standing just in the doorway of about a 10 x 12 room. The puppies were in a whelping box in the far corner of the room. She came to me sniffing and wagging. I patted her on the head a few times-"Good girl"-then she jumped up and bit me on the chin. Being ten and dumb (and scared) I turned to run and she bit me on the back of my ankle. 8 or 9 weeks later when the puppies had been given away, she attacked a little boy riding by their house on a bicycle. A few weeks later they had to have her put down, as the agression/protectiveness was causing her to bite and snarl at her family members. It was very sad.
