i have a 3 year old pure bred jack russell female. i decided i wanted her to have a litter of puppies, and found a good male for her to breed with. he has fathered puppies before so has some experience.
she started bleeding about 10-11 days ago, and the last time i saw drops of blood on her or on the floor was two days ago. after reading a lot about breeding and heat cycles, i figured the couple of days following the end of her bleeding would be the best time to breed her. so last night, we brought her over to mate with the male. it didn't take very long for the male to start mounting her. she was flagging, and presenting her rear end, looked more than willing. they danced around and tried for quite a long time, the male was having a hard time cause he is slightly shorter. so we tried helping by holding the female or pushing him up a little. when he actually got the aim right, the female yelped and turned around and licked herself, pushing the male off. she did this quite a few times. but after every time, she would flag again, let him mount her, until he started penetrating her and she yelped again. so my question... is this a sign that she isn't lubricated enough and needs to wait a couple more days before she is fully ready? or did i miss her ovulation? ps. for the record, last year when she was in heat, a boston terrier mounted her (he was fixed) by accident and there was no problem as far as her being in pain or anything. i actually expected the breeding to be easier since she had had that experience before. |

It could be that it is just a couple days too early. Sounds like she is teasing the male. Wants his interest but is not ready for him yet.
If you want to know for sure where she is at in her cycle you can get a progesterone blood test done on her. They ovulate at 5.0 and can be bred up to 3-5 days after reaching 5. |

Often times, a neutered male is much smaller than an in-tact male. He could just be too big for her. Have they tied since?

I would wait a couple days yet. She thinks she is ready and not really. The heat on my ******* are totally messed up, must be this hot weather.
Kinda keep a check and if she was bred before it should be easier but must be on the right day, I breed the 14 and 16 well into the cycle. I think the litters are more uniformed and nicer. Just my personal experience of years doing this by trial and error of.? |
