Puppy shots question

I went to the vet today to get Tips his 3rd set of shots. He's 14 weeks now. He got his first shots at 7 weeks, then more at 11 weeks.

The vet told me to come back in 2 weeks for more... Were pups not supposed to have only 3 sets? She told me that puppies need to have the last set at 4 months, then they are fully immunized?

I'm really confused... I thought this was the last set and then I would be able to finally take Tips out in 10 days

Can anyone enlighten me?

Angry

Listen Honey you should be confused and somewhat upset, vets are giving pups tooooooo many shots. One of my pups listened to the vet, kept going back and it went into seizures and about died, thank GOD for a shot of benadryl.

I give at 2 weeks a straight parvo because people want to start to view and look. Then they are vetted at 7 weeks or so, then 12 to 15 weeks last one with Rabi vac.

Then as adult every 2 to 3 years a booster, we must cut down on vets pushing shots on our pets. They are more deadly than the diseases, honestly I am now researching shots, did the dog food thing. www.vomschreknhaus.com I will have a series of dog shots, what they are doing to our pets also like the bad dog feeds.

Well, Fran. It depends. What did shots did the pup recieve?

Is it a small puppy, or a breed prone to negative reactions; and the vet is separating them?

Some dogs can not take the combo shot, and the vet will give Distemper, Hepatitis and Corona one day, then ask you to come back for more. Or the vaccs are diluted and you need to get them tipped off.

Otherwise, it is too much. I think they should go 8, 12, 16 weeks, then one year and two years... After that look at the titres, or just guess and go every other.

Each vet has its own protocol. Here is the protocol for the vet I work for. At 6-8 weeks, the vet vaccinates with a DAPP, distemper, adreno, parvo and para. Then they want pup back in 4 weeks for a DALPP, the same as before but with Lepto. And then again 4 weeks later for Rabies and another DALPP. Depending on the situation at the breeders, the vet may recommend a parvo only vaccination at a very early age. But after puppy shots, then we want to see them one year after their last vaccinations for a DALPP and Rabies. The DAPP (not lepto) and the rabies are good for 3 years and Lepto must be vaccinated against every year.

Now, we very commonly split vaccs on pups just to see if there is any vaccination reaction. But it just means more trips to the vet, not more vaccinations.

So, my point is, ask your vet what their vaccination protocol is. Have them explain it thoroughly to you and ask a lot of questions. I agree that we are over vaccinating for the most part. Just don't be afraid to ask your vet.

He got the combo everytime. Except today he got rabies too.

He didn't do the first one at 7 weeks, it's the rescue that did, as they didn't want to let the pups go without the first vaccination. When I went to see the vet at 8 weeks he told me to come 2 weeks later, which I did, then 3 weeks later, which was today. Today I saw another vet who told me to come in 2 weeks again.

He's a medium breed, at 14 weeks he weights 17 lbs.

Thanks for the help.

Depends on what you've had.

Around here, we do 3 distemper (the distemper combo thing), 2 lymes, and 1 rabies.

So, if you plan it right, then you go in 3 times. 1 for distemper, 2 for distemper and lymes, and 3 for distemper, lymes, and rabies.

If you plan it wrong, or your vet doesn't like to give them together, then you end up going back in for "more shots" because you haven't completed the series... but, "more shots" doesn't necessarily mean the same shots.

Sam and I had 4 appointments - distemper at 5.5 weeks, distemper at 10.5 weeks, distemper and lymes at 15 weeks, and finally lymes and rabies at 18.5 weeks.

I'm in the UK and my vet does one at 8 weeks and then another at 10 weeks and then the pup is allowed out one week after that. BUT we only have to have Rabies vaccination if you want to get a Pet Passport.
