Collie question for ya
not sure this is where i should post this or if it's in breeds but here we go. I have always heard collies were such wonderful all around dogs....good with other animals, kids, very social, smart etc etc. With that in mind these so called experts have never met my collie laddie. Now bear in mind laddie is supposed to be a purebred collie but he's not registered and have no clue as to his pedigree so it's just taking the breeders word for it. I adore Laddie hubby and i went out to the breeders place and picked him out brought him home and he was VERY anitsocial, shy wouldn't come up to us had to actually go pick him up and bring him over to yourself to pet or go to him and sit there. I spent hrs with this dog and half the time he'd growl at me or pee on the floor cause he was nervous. We bought him in Dec. and was told he'd been born in Sept. A friend had found out after we bought him the same breeder had just been advertising a litter of puppies in may then in feb or march after we'd bought him she had more pups for sale. He is the WORST example of a Collie if what people say is true about how wonderful they are what's up with my dog. I consulted a dog behavorist and she told me to roll him over over on his back everytime he growled at me which i did. He turned out to be a great dog for me but i don't trust him around other people, he's VERY nervous if it thunders he pees, if someone yells even the bird he pees, if other dogs get near him he growls, if kids hang on him he growls. Can this be a result of breeding? Plus i forgot to mention he is not very big. My mother in law says he reminds her of a sheltie (same personality others have said the same) Collies are fairly good size arent they? He is like 22 inches in height i believe any ideas?

Yes! Most definitely. If you breed poorly tempered dogs you will can get poorly tempered puppies. But, if corrected early on, the dog could still turn out fine.

My only other answer would be that is just how your dog is. That is his personality. ????I am in no way an expert,..sorry that I can't offer any more answers.

Hey Honey, THis is the perfect example of very POOR breeding of this poor dog.
He is shy, this is exactly what u do not want if u have pick of litter in choosing the one that stays behind the others. He was never socialized as this could of been brought back with young training of him as a puppy for I have done this with dosg shy, timid, scared of noises, etc. It takes work but if your a patient loving person, work with him. If u have a friend with a super adult, hang behind on a walk and let the dog observe the good adult, let them play together, is is great therapy to have good adults for pups to learn from. Find somebody that can help with their good adult, have them bring theres to a place they can play freely, he will look up to this adult and learn good things, do not punish him for peeing when frightened or intimdated. He will soon learn to stand up and hopefully not get mean and nastey. If u start right now with Positive training along side a great adult to look up to he will come back some. Maybe not all the way, but to the point u can handle and trust him with children. Have kids come and play with toys in a Positive manner with him, reward him with pet and praise. He will learn to love the kids if u school them on what to do before hand. The dog need alot of work, socialization, play time with dogs and kids, go to parks, play grounds, etc. Expose him to everything u can think of cross bridges with water running, even stop and encourage him to drink the pet and praise him with tons of hugs and love. He will soon learn to trust the one training him and look up to u for all his needs. He will be a good dog if u help him right now. If u need anything further, please ask me. Good luck to you and the pet. Blessing. Pat |

Harry is exactly the same! He's a collie, and he's nervous, I don't trust him around other ppl at all without being on a lead. The dog behaviorist who told you to roll him on to his back gave you good info, though I found it difficult to do so with Harry
He hates brooms, and ppl yelling (yes even the bird!!) and he's only ever really nice to ppl if he know them or was acquainted with them before, otherwise we have to put him in the laundry for ppl to actually relax while their in the living room.

his age
I forgot to mention he's already 3 he does like kids it's just that if they get rough he'll growl he's NEVER bit a kid but i just don't trust him. Oh and i forgot to mention that i had to board him at my fathers farm for a bit and dad tied him a tree so he wouldn't run off (no kennel available) he bit my dad AND his brother in law. He does not do well with large men which is exactly what my dad is, plus he's not the gentlest man he's not abusive with his animals but i guess gruff would be the term he has cattle and horses so he needs to be that way when i got Laddie back he was WORSE than when i sent him there and he was so happy to be home it was pathetic. We had to move and were buying a home so we had to find one plus then buy so he was at my dad's for like2 or 3 months so the change and having to reaquaint himself with thor didn't help. He also has car issues he is fine until you stop at a stop light or stop sign then you HAVE to let him out NOT to pee but to throw up

Harry's 3 too!! Funny, cause Harry's uncle is called Laddie, and Harry was like that with bigger men, but my dad wouldn't let him be anymore, so now their friends. He HAD car issues, but we've gotten him over that too, we got him when he was1 so he musta been misused, abused, or not socialized properly during the time we didn't have that made him that way. Tell me, does Laddie like playing with sticks?

i came close to taking laddie back he was that much trouble. I guess i'm stubborn and i had wanted a collie for awhile. I was determined to develop a relationship with this dog....I should have turned around and left when we went there, i mean i love this dog BUT when i went out there the pups all came running around in a group they came up to us played got attention so there was no way to really no signs there, but when i looked around they were allowing the pups to eat and chew on deer hooves and heads YUCK!! They told me they were socialized and that their grandkids handled them regularly i guess it just goes to show no matter how careful you are you can still get a neuratic dog
but i love him and all his faults i just am a bit more careful with him around other dogs and people

Well, I guess that's what my breeder was like too, and she even faked a few parting tears
It's a pain, cause Harry's fine at home with no strangers, but he won't even allow the neighbors to go up their drive! I think what really helps is the three hour walk he gets daily that makes him tired enough not to bark(he's a fat little boy, just needs good excercise and less food!) or lunge. Have you been to the vet recently?
