a breeding question...

ok, my mom is a former Sheltie breeder so she is helping me what it comes to possably breeding Misty, but she has not bred in a long time and I have a question, my mom says I need to get a job quick so have have money and either breed her or spay her in her next 2-3 seasons, because Mistys seasons have started comming sooner, for example normally she comes into season every 6 months to the daybut her last season was after 5 months, and it seems her next seson is comming soon, and its only been 4 months, my mom says Mistys body is trying to tell me something, and she IS in her breeding prime right now, but this is sooner then I planned, I was going to wait till she had trialed first but she has only seen sheep 3 times, while I DO know that she is good at herding, and I knows her strengths and weaknesses, and I now know what to look for in a stud for her. she will of caurse finnish her health testing, so far she has only have her eyes CERF'd, her hips need done, and I would like to have her Elbows done as well.but it seems I have been given a choice to either breed her soon or spay her, but this seems to soon to me? I had not planned on it till after I moved at the earliest. Misty is going on 3 years old in november, so my question is, is my mom right? do I need to breed her sooner then I had originally planned? or is is safe to wait another 2-3 years?

well im not an expert at breeding but i know that it costs ALOT of money to breed no matter how big or small the dog is...you have to pay for 1st shots, food ext you have to be prepared if for some reason misty wouldnt let the pups nurse ext. so i would wait till your prepared phsiclly and financially...

I know the costs lol hence why my mom sais I need to get a job as soon as possable lol food is not much aof a problem as I feed RAW, not hard to throw a few more veggies in the blender, and we ONLY vaccinate for PARVO, so that also scratches a huge cost off the list. I know I need money for vet visits, ultra sounds, the rest of Mistys health testing, stud fee's, money set aside in case of a C-section, the puppys check-ups, the cost of building a whelping box, and having milk replacement on hand in case of a problem etc etc.. I know all that, its just that I was not planning on it till after she had trialed in order to prove her worth in the feild, however we had also planned to move THIS summer, but it was moved to next summer which put my plans on hold, I guess I am just feeling guilty because I always said I would wait till she had trialed first.

Talking

Listen Sweetie, Do the right thing have the hips n elbows certified by OFA for a normal or a fast normal ...a is excellent, a fast normal if good. I would NOT breed anything less even though u might get a fair on return showing no HD the chances of HD coming into the litter is more so than with A and A fast normal.

Also, pick a stud male better than she in qualities she might be weaker in. Do not worry about her herding, u can breed and sell puppies if she is sound and healthy and certifies on the HD with OFA. and the stud also must be tops over her.

This way u can give a two year warranty on the pups and sell them for a nice buck with a 72 hour health certificate to vet the pup they choose to find it free of anything to hinder it for a lifetime or a replacement will be made, I make NO refunds ever.

If u set up your breeding program nicely with good warranty, health guarantee, know your lines so well they are FREE of anything healthy wise to have genes slip into the pups even though they might is why u offer a warranty for way back in pedigrees it can and will. Just pray it does not.

Breed her if healthy and I like to breed late into the heat for I feel more folicles are falling and I get more uniformed litters I need and stronger pups of deep pigment, size, etc. Just my personal thought on my dogs in to breeding I used to breed the 11 and 13 heat days, now I breed the 14 and 16 day of heat, better puppies for me. By trial and error we try and breed to beat the odds, I do not breed a bitch unless I have a wait list of people wanting puppies as I do NOT want puppies not needed.

BLessings

["Do not worry about her herding"

You SHOULD worry about herding. It is my firm belief that no dog should be bred if it not able to do the job that it was originally bred to do. Have you seen a herding trainer? Even if you have not the time to trial her, they will tell you her faults and abilities when it comes to herding. The dog should also be able to do farely well in the conformation ring..and at least have some points. CGC and TDI certification are always a pluss to prove that your bitch has an excellent temperment.

I would not rush breeding. Breeding is a very hard and serious job to do.

"[b], I make NO refunds ever"

A good breeder WILL make refunds if something unfortunate due to breeding happens to the puppy.

Goodluck with everything!

Tessa, I've never heard of a breeder giving back cash, it's always for an exchange with another puppy.

Even with the best possible breeding practices there is a possibility of problems.

oh I fully plan to have her tested, this is the deciding facter on whether is is spayed or bred lol however ignoring the herding is completly and totally out of the question, I am breeding strictly working border collies, and its impossable to better the working border collie by ignoreing the herding. I wanted her proven against other dogs, to prove that she is worthy of passing on her genes and to make a name for herself..(not that she does not already have one, tons of people want Mistys puppys lol but its because of her personality) while the 3 times she did go herding it was with BC breeders and trialers and they all said she was very good(not nearly as good as Happy mind you lol) they said she listens very well, and learns quick, she is very good at keeping the sheep together and bringing back strays, I was told that if the sheep broke of the pen I could easily count on her to bring em back lol I also know that she likes to hold the sheep, and I know she is too hyper, a good BC needs to be able to settle when needed, so I want an obviously healthy stud that is calmer, and has a good outrun and drive. ya know I am starting to feel better about this now that I think about it more and realize that I do know a lot about her abilitys and what kind of stud I want to compliment her.. lol and that I know I am not seeing her through rose coloured glasses because several well known people in the trial world have seen her work, and liked her. I think I feel better now and I wont let the people who are againt me breeding(simply because I am young) get me down

Unhappy

I am going on buying West German Bred Shepherds that were sent to me by top Breeders, like a LONG coat for breeding, they would not refund a penny nor apply another $400 placed on another puppy from them, stupid me buying another when I got my first one a long coat to use.

I just mean that if something happens not genetic and beyond control of you that u do not refund or u will be doing that constantly as people do not listen on how to properly raise a puppy. I give a folder of info on how to but they tend not to read all things and do dumb things, but all has worked out for me by emailing them help.

I guess I should just leave this board as it seems I am getting worse than better. I am just trying to tell you what has happened to me with U.S. Breeders that suck me so I had to make my own rules as People will do anything to suck out of u what they should not do if they follow the warranty in full that I give and to feed properly, exercise, and just follow the rules to not void their warranty. Sorry if I sounded like she should not be titled, as I do not title mine in Shutzhund even though several work the sleeve nicely with a full hard grip or bite, I have been told by the Germans bad things happen biting the stomach, etc. I cannot have that with small children coming here so often to view and play with the dogs.

Herding is a wonderful safe sport or work to teach a dog to do and I advise it to be done. I am sorry if I came off wrong before breeding.

I will back off on this board and maybe just sign off. I have tried to be a help to many but seems I am being ganged up on??

Blessings
Pat
