Pitbull Breeding? Adivce please and NO judgement

OKay Please don't give me grief about breeding pitbulls. I love my pit and I want to be able to have some babies from her because she is a one of a kind. She is in heat right now
about a month ago she was not in heat and she was at my friends house for about a week socializing with there male pit that way they would be comfortable around each other come the time. AND they did great loved each other very much. Well I took her over there today to leave her there to breed. AND as soon as we put her in the pen with the male hey attacked her and they fought. No one is hurt bad. Which is good.I was so scared because the people who had my dog before had her trained for fighting. But she is my yard witha female basset hound and the love each other. Well She locked onto the males neck and wouldn't let go and the male him being young didn't know how to lock so he just kept biting her. It took us a while to get them seperated We used a water hose a pole a shovel. I was crying the whole time. But I checked her over she has alo of bite marks on her face. But nothing deep thank god.I washed it really good and took her home. I just don't understand why they started fighting It really upsets me because they could have killed each other and They were getting along a few weeks earlier. I really want to breed her but because of this I am very unsure now. Someon said muzzel the dogs but I don't want to do that either I know my pit would not like that PLEASE DON"T CRITISIZE

I'm not a breeder but I do know that a female may initiate a fight until she is ready to mate. The male that attacked her should not be the male you use to breed. I would look around (wait if you need to) for a male of better quality than her with a good disposition. I would not allow the male & female together until she is at the standing stage of her heat.

Don't rush into things - another heat is only 6 months away which would allow you to read up on the process and find a good candidate for a stud (health testing if not done)

well I breed her in december and she did not take so And this pit I was going to breed her is in prefect health no inbreeding or anything as far as the owner knows he has a good tempermant. And they have been toghter before but when she was not in heat. BUT someon told me earlier that he is just trying to show her dominance but she is not a submissive pit. I don't know if that is true or not

I would really find another Stud to breed with. Dont be suprised if they fight. They are pit bulls. Its only by instinct. And are you sure you want to be breeding a fighting dog?

I hate to say this but if you have any doubts then spay her now. The number of pits being put down in shelters is very very high. Any of your potential puppy owners could get one there. You have a long life to get into breeding at some later point in your life.

Well The people supposedly had her trained for fighting but this is the first time I have ever seen her hurt another animal. Her yard friend is a femal basset hound which is alot smaller that her and they get along great. BUT she has the perfect tempermant she is not crazy or wild or jumpy like some. She is GREAT with kids. And I already have homes for the puppies if she takes. I am keeping one and depending on how many she has 5 others are spoken for.
I am aware of the pits un shelters I work at a shelter and we get alot of pit puppies but suprisngly we actually work harder to get pit puppies on the adoption floor we have a bunch of pit mixes that make to the doption floor. the majority of pits we have put down all had behaviour problems or health problems. They guy that used to own my pit got all of his dogs confiscated and had state charges on them. One of which was a puppy froma litter she had a year ago. They were all skinny which makes me glad I have my pit now or else she would have been in the shelter. They all got euthanized cause they were really sick and were fighting dogs
But I will look around to see if I can find something better for her.
Would you suggest muzzling?

I'm of the belief that unless the dog (or horse, or any other animal) is an incredible specimen that it should not be bred. Simply being pretty or having a "one-of-a-kind" personality is simply not enough. Too many factors go into shaping a dog's personality to be able to recreate it, in my opinion.

Do you really feel its neccessary. Speaking sincerely...we have had many people who said "I want to breed my dog because his temperment is perfect and he is healthy" Well...just about all owners would say their dog is perfect, for them. Does your dog have proven health records? Registered? If not...you are only contributing to pit population which isnt bad...but definitly not neccessary. You work at a shelter correct? You know very well that pits are being killed everyday because there are so many of them that are unwanted. Why do you feel you want to bring more. Why dont you leave it up to the breeders.

You have already seen your dog fight the stud. Setting them up in hopes of breeding is even more risky because they have already fought. So you asked...what if I muzzle them. If the 2 dogs are going to constantly be at eachothers throats (LITTERALLY LOL) then I dont think much breeding will be done.

Please dont take my post as rude. I love pit bulls very much and am not biased against them. IMO, if you want another pit why dont you adopt the next one that comes in?
