With 3 kids I would assume you will need a "tougher" dog. A jack russel or beagle might be suitable. My first recommendation is to go to your local shelter and see if a mutt might not be the dog of perfect fit.

A beagle will be loud and a Jack Russel will never stop! If you are a beginner with dogs, I would not get the Jack Russel, but maybe a mix. Jack Russels are a lot calmer when mixed. Call rescues.

How about a cocker spaniel? How small do you want? If you want smaller, miniature poodles are good with kids, but with all small breeds, you have to make sure that the children know how to be gentle with the little dog. Or a Pug would be good, they're smaller, pretty hardy, and do well with kids. Here's a good site, toward the bottom of each breed page is the level of suitability for children http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet...ogs-breeds.htm.

IMO...JRT is not a good choice. Way to energetic for children and demanding in general. The local shelter would be your best bet first. Plus, the dogs are most likely older then 1 or 2 so the dog will be calmer then a puppy and way less demanding.

Sheltie! Mine's 11 lbs, and a total lap dog. But not too prissy and just LOVES kids. Ollie sees a kid, and it's all he can do to give it kisses and play with them. And usually kids his size.. which they say is the opposite for small dogs.. but Ollie loves like 2-4 yr olds. Of course bigger ones too!
By GSD do you mean German Shep? Just want to clarify, because so often I read people want a small dog that doesn't shed. Sheltie's shed in clumps usually.. so their shedding is more controllable. |

i agree go to shelter.. give a homeless guy a go.. and also most shelters like our rspca.. have animal behaviourists that assess suitablity of individual dogs. and u can almost get any type dog at these places. at our rspca dogs are usually microcipped vaccinated and desexed making them ready to go much cheaper than buying a pedigree and having to do all this.. i am unsure of ur laws. as i dont know where ur from.... let us know how u go.
