Something on dog's ear, please help.
Hi guys and girls, first post here. My dog Koba is a 2-year old shepherd mix (actually, the jury is still out on what she is a mix of, I have been suggested a rottie, a doberman, a pit, I will post some photos later and see what you guys think).
She has developed something on the inside of her ear flap near the tip (I attached some quick shots so you would have an idea). She's had it for a couple of weeks now, it looks like a wound, it gets covered with dark brown crust which then flakes off. There is also a little bit of it on the outer part of her eartip. It does not seem to bother her and she is not scratching it. I have been putting some A&D ointment on it as per vet's suggestion and spraying it with anti-septic spray. It seems to be getting a little smaller but it is not healing. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

I think I would go back to the vets and have him take a skin sample/culture. If it is fungal in nature a different course of treatment might speed healing.
It looks pretty nasty - sending hugs to your pup |

Could be anything... Yucky. Getting smaller is a good thing... I'm with Dax for the sample. Continue to keep it clean, and don't let her touch it.
By the way, she looks like an ACD mix to me

Yes , take her to the vet.
Just a quick question. Is she kept outside a lot ? If so that could be from biting flies. If you leave a dog outside for extended periods of time the flies will pick and area and bit it over and over again unitl it bleeds and if the dog continues to be outside with the wounds they will not heal because the flies are relentless. If this is what it is, then use vaseline to cover the ear tips and the area of the wound. The flies do not like vaseline and will leave the area alone. |
