Question what's the story with chicken bones

I've been feeding Ariel human food like carrots, peas, and chicken drumsticks along with puppy chow. My question is with the drumstick. Should i let her chew on the bone or take it away from her when she has eaten all the chicken from it. Her little jaws are strong enough to break the bones up and swallow the whole thing in little pieces. I've ben told that this isn't good for a dog some i'm curious to know if thats true.

no you should never let her have the bone even when your around. it could get lodged in her throat..and that would NOT be good. my neighbor used to have rottie puppy (hes big now) she came to my door at like 7pm crying that rex was choking on a chicken bone and she needed a ride to the vet luckly he survived ..but you should never give her chicken bones.. its too risky!

The RAW diet is great for all dogs if one can afford it, me with 7 Shepherds I cannot so I am forced to find a decent dog kibble for mine, but now and then I bring home some raw meat and bones.

The dog can eat meat and bones, it learns to chew them up long as it is RAW. never cooked, they splinter and can choke a dog to death. Feed some organs like liver, necks, heart etc. It is great if u can afford it along with fresh cubed veggies and fruits some of them and give a total egg shell and all good for dogs. Do not give milk, too much cottage cheese because of the salt, but honey is a great tonic for dogs once a week a tbsp is good and also if it gets the runs give a tbsp on canned pumpkin, not flavored. GOod Luck.

Chicken Bones arent a good idea because unlike other bones they arent solid, they have splinters in the inside and thats why they say never give your dog chicken bones is because it can get stuck in thier throat.

I have copied this from a vets site of answering questions on the BARF diet, here it is from the horses mouth, safe:::RAW CHICKEN

necks, wings etc. – it is safe and very inexpensive. Raw chicken bones are harmless; it is when you cook them that they become sharp and dangerous. Salmonella and campylobacter jejuni are of no consequence to a healthy dog. You can feed the whole chicken including ribs if you prefer – any part which sells for a good price, always raw.

Just as many vets will also say it is not safe for your dog . The BARF diet is very controversial , even among vets .
Personally , I do not give my dogs any kind of bird bones . I would rather err on the side of caution - there are plenty of other things to feed my dog , without possibly finding out the hard way , that the bones are not , in fact , safe .

Any cooked bone is not good for dogs. It could possibly splinter and cause perforation of the stomach or bowel. Raw bones are ok to feed as long as the dog is supervised.

Dobified tends to be our raw expert.

Sounds to me from the original post the chicken bones are cooked. I would NOT feed my dog cooked chicken bones because they do splinter. Its my understanding raw chicken bones are just fine.

dobermom,
you are right i have been cooking the bones because i thought raw chicken was unhealthy for dogs. I guess i was thinking like a human since it's not healthy for us either. Thankfully we have a vet visit on saturday so I will check to make sure she is doing ok inside since i've fed her a couple of bones already.
I'm very interested in starting my pup on raw food since i'm not that fond of the garbage dog food the companies put in dog chow.

Actually i've noticed a difference in her already. She was active and happy before but now it seems to have increased even more. I haven't changed anything in her routine other than her food so i have to equate the change to the food. So far so good :-)
