Dog Pregnancy Termination

I hesitate to ask this question, least I be attacked, but please - I am just looking for some solid information on the topic of "Terminating a Dog Pregnancy" - background: I purchased a beautiful purebred long-hair chihuahua with the intention of breeding and maybe one day getting into showing - she is a puppy (about 6.75mo at the time), no one told me that she would go into heat around 6 months (this is the first time I've owned a female, I have a 2 yr old male) so as you have all guessed during her first heat they mated - - - we all know better now, we have a home that the famale will stay in when she is in heat and we do not want to breed her ------- so with all that said, i fear that she is pregnant, the vets, yes that is plural say that i need to wait another 10 days or so to get either an ultrasound or blood test for around $75-$100 with the office visit depending on which vet is speaking, no one has been clear (some are quite smug & judgemental and insist that spaying her is the only way to abort) - I've also been told that a c-section could be done for about $500 to abort - - - but, is this my only option if she is indeed pregnant, a c-section sounds so amazingly extreme - - - please, are there any other options to abort that anyone out there knows of, I really want to put her through as little stress as possible - your time and kind words are appreciated - THANK YOU

The only way I'm aware of is for a spay procedure where the vet takes all the reproductive organs plus the pups.

Having said that - there may be injections that will cause her to abort or absorb the pups. Have you asked your vet. GretaJack may have more info

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck

I found information for you including the drug names. It is possible and hopefully not too far along.

Im not going to judge you. Heh accidents happen. What can I say. The important thing is you are concerned and taking it seriously.

On the topic of your vet. He doesnt want to carry on a conversation on that topic? Whats his problem? Hes a vet. And as a vet its up to him to inform you on your options. If he isnt fullfilling that duty then maybe its best you find another vet who will.

Because the pregnancy is so early in. I beleive it can be terminated. But because you want to breed her in the future, spaying isnt an option I guess? Ive heard spaying early in the pregnancy can abort it but thats not what you want so that puts you in an awkward situation. 6 months is way to young to have a pup. From what I hear the dog should be around 2 before its first litter.

Oh I almost forgot. If you do decide to have the pup. Make sure you get an ultrasound to confirm its more then one pup in the womb. If its only one. The puppy probably wont be able to be delivered properly because it will be to big to fit through.

Best of luck

my regular vet does not handle this kind of thing - he referred me to an animal hospital and i wound up calling 3 places to find out my options and 1 said spaying was my only choice another said a $500 c-section abortion and one wouldn't even talk to me after i told them the problem because i wasn't a current patient (this was after waiting and waiting and waiting for return calls) - i never got a return call from others - - - i read the information on that site, thank you - though now i need to find a vet that will talk to me about those options - what an exhausting thought

There is an injection that will prevent pregnancy from happening(must be given wihtin a few days??? of the mating)...but I think this is no longer an option for you.

I'm glad that you are taking this seriously and are very concerned. Your baby is MUCH to young...whether it be a spay or just a c-section.....it needs to be done. The spay would most likely be easier on your bitch, but you'd like to show her. But, then again, we've had a bitch that had to have a c-section and she seemed to heal pretty well.

Good luck with your girl.

Izzy - here is a reproductive specialist in Nevada. It might be far away but there is a phone number. Maybe you can call them to discuss the options listed in the other website.
