clipping nails

I've always believed there is nothing wrong with nail clipping for the pooches, but i heard the other day (can't remember where i heard it) that you shouldn't clip the nails just let them wear down themselves...any thoughts?

Well if your dogs are on concrete all the time they may wear them down. I am in 5 acres in the country and there is no concrete. I have to clip mine. I know some people also use a dremmel, but my dog woould be afraiid of the noise

Hi,
I am lucky enough to have cement walks to the house and garages.
I also have limestone drive and it is like concrete now being packed for so many years.
Hence, my dogs nails wear almost down too far. If I have a dog in heat I do not want bred, my kennels are concrete with rubber mats to lay on outside, they being in them for a couple weeks, wear them to the quick.
Otherwise, my indoor pets I no longer have, I had to nip the tips down.

Nail clipping is necessary if your dogs do not naturally wear down their nails ie by walking on concrete or a similar hard surface. I have to do Poppy's about once a month and we do walk on concrete everyday...

I am all for keeping a dogs nails down, I just am fortunate enough not to have to do it for now anyhow.
There is nothing wrong with keeping a dogs nail down, I hate to see over grown ones at that. I have to clip my parrotts now that is a real chore for he bites my crippled fingers till blood is running like a pig. I really need help when I do Zulu's toes and wings, he fears the sizzors and nippers worse than any pain for it is painless. Hope your all not sweating like we are in Pa today is awful hot.

I am with you on that Sheplvr, I hate to see overgrown nails too. There was a dog at our training session the other day who had nails so long it was unbelievable - you could see how he was having to position his paws because of his long nails.

I clipped Poppy's the day before her annual checkup at the vets this week so she could "check my work" - I thought I was doing them right but just wanted the vet to see and tell me if I was cutting them right. She said they were "perfect" - boy was I pleased - at least I can do something right!

GESSS, I did not know your cross the Pond, Bless Your Heart, so far away from me in Pa.?
Yes, it is a pity that when walking in a mall, town, park and I look a dog over and see long gross nails, especially on old dogs old people are walking, maybe they just do not know any better.
GOod for you doing a super fine job for I could not cut my dogs nails, I would end up cutting their toes..lol

Mara walks alot on concrete and pavement but I still have to clip her nails about every 2 weeks. I hate seeing dogs with nails too long. It's so bad for their feet.

I use a sissors style clipper about every ten days, and then use a dremmel drill to sand them smooth so they aren't so sharp.
