Need help
I have a female sheperd with a inoperable tumor, and also have one of her offspring, a 5 year old male. How do I help him deal with the loss of his mother?

If both were healthy, I'd do the same thing that I did when I had my horse and a son of hers... I would seperate them for short periods of time, building up to a week or two before putting them back together.
But, that might be very stressful for the mother dog as well, and you don't want to agrivate her condition. And given that, I might just let both live, and have a depressed son for a while once she is gone. He'll get over it, espically because you are not going anywhere or getting rid of him. He'll miss the family member, but your presence should help him. Also, make sure that you've got some old towels, blankets, or shirts with her scent. Being able to smell her, for a while, may calm him as well. *HUGS* I'm sorry that you're going to go through this. I wish the absolute best for your family in the upcoming months. Kelly |
