seperation anxiety??

Does anyone elses dog have SERIOUS seperation anxiety?? malakais been getting worse and worse with it.. the other day when i came home from the store (for an hour) i thought malakai was dying he was whining and howling SOO loud when i came in.. that my neighbor came over and asked if everything was ok... I know Great Danes have pretty bad seperation anxiety but..my god.. he was SOO loud and he would not settle down..when he was little little we always thought it was cute but since his voice has gotton deeper weve stopped reacting to him as much...when we come home we'll let him out say hi and pet him but never get overly excited..it hasnt worked..it seems like its gotton worse he acts like he hasnt seen me in days..lol any suggetions??

Piper had separation anxiety. The one thing we tried was letting her out right away when we got home, before letting her say hi. It didn't help that much, but it took off the barking edge and made it more enjoyable for us to come home. She learned that n order to say hello, she had to go outside and pee. Then come in, so it calmed her nerves a little.

Oscar had a severe case of seperation anxiety. Make sure you go out everyday for about 20 minutes atleast. Slowly increase the time. Soon he will stop barking...

Kirby used to have horrid separation anxiety. When I left the house, he would SCREAM, not whine. It sounded like a human baby crying. It took a while, with use of crate, to up his independence a bit. The rest came with time and age. He still doesn't like being alone.

ignore

I think if you ignore them until they settle down for a minute and then give them attention they will learn that being calm is the way to get attention.

Tanner has SA, but thankfully doesn't need me. He just needs another warm body around. If I leave Jack or Greta with him he does fine but if I leave him as the only dog and no human, he looses it. He shredded my basement door. It is close to having a hole all the way through it from leaving him home alone one time. So the next time I left him by himself I crated him. Uhm, wrong decision. He pooped, peed and vomitted in the crate. Tanner's SA is severe, but considering his past life, who could blame him? He lived in a laundry room. I am just glad that he is happy with G and J's presence because I could not live with a dog with full blown human SA!

Suggestions on SA? Dr Patricia McConnell has a great book out on SA. Her web site is http://www.dogsbestfriendtraining.com/books-retail.php for a link to the book, plus I am sure there is a homepage link from that. The book is awesome in how to deal with SA and how to prevent SA from developing in a young pup. The book is called "i"ll be home soon"
