Woming collies
I heard that some wormers have been known to cause death in collies have you guys heard this? The lady i bought Laddie from said never to worm your collie unless you have to, because some wormers cause death in collies (certain ingrediants like ivemectrin) ivemectrin is in horse wormers why would it be in dog worm meds? I am very nervous when i get into the vet would it be rude to ask what ingrediants are in the wormer?

Ivermectin is extremely deady even in tiny doses in some collies. However, even though some collies are not affected at all, there is currently no way to test these dogs. It is my recomendation to NEVER even try to give a collie ivermectin. Even half of a dose can kill. One downfall to this is treating demodex mites, which are genetic in collies. The mites will attack a genetically weak immune system. The cure is ivermectin. Other treatments are available, however, and one way to cure it is spaying the dog. As for heartworm pills, anything without ivermectin is okay. I have tried Revolution and Interceptor with good results. If you ever have any problems with demodex mites, pm me. I have mass amounts of experience. We had one collie, Tess, who nearly died from being weakened by them. She had no hair and was red and bloody. After every possible treatment, we simply spayed her and hoped for the best. But never, did we try ivermectin. It is a collie Killer. My worst nightmare.

Ivermectin is a very common ingredient in dog dewormers, Heartguard being the most commonly known. You can also use Strongid, Pyrantel, Albon, Nemex 2, etc.
Never be afraid to ask your vet questions about any medications that they put your pets on. You need to feel comfortable with how they are treating your dog so make sure that you ask them. I have never heard any thing about Ivermectin and Collies. But I don't own a collie... So yes, next trip to the vet, ask. |

I have seen ivermectin poisoning in collies. It is NOT worth the risk. I couldn't believe that some websites were saying that it's okay to give it in the recommended doses. It is NOT okay. Your collie could die from a very small dose. What's worst, as one breeder told me, they ddon't necessarily sow symptoms right away and can suddenly die days later. |
