Ive been thinking for awhile, it would be a neat thing to rescue a dog from a pound later on in life, maybe 2 or 3 years down the road.
Get one of those purebreed mutts you know.Has anyone rescued from a pound? not an organization but just a regular county pound? Do you think this is a good idea... Any pictures to show of your pound mutts?

I have, my first GSD came from a shelter/pound, my current GSD was taken from the shelter/pound by the rescue group because she wasn't doing well in the cage. As I've metnioned in other posts, the second dog, Lola who came to me as a foster turned out to be a GSD, but could have been anything.
I think any dog I get in the future will be a rescue. Both of my "shelter dogs" have been my favoriate breed GSD, but who knows it could be one of those "purebreed mutts". Just an FYI, a lot of rescue groups only take dogs from the pound/shelter, the group my Lola came from only does shelter rescues. The women who created the organization worked at the shelter that Murphy came from and was the person who let me adopt her. I seem to lack the skill to post pictures or I would, someone want to help me with this? |

I've taken in two "pound" dogs and both were really great dogs. One facility was broken into two sections; one section had dogs that they knew nothing about since they were just dropped off or found wandering by the dog warden; the other section had dogs they knew about because maybe the owner turned them in because they couldn't take care of them anymore.
I prefer the latter, if possible. For example, I knew she was housebroken, I knew her age, I knew her name, I knew what she had been eating... Taffy was turned into the pound because the owner had a stroke and couldn't care for her anymore. The previous owner even left her phone number so I could call her, which I did. I learned a lot more about Taffy and she was glad to know Taffy was in good hands. On the other hand, the second pound didn't have this so it was a **** shoot. Tyler was a shepherd/collie mix and wound up having both hips replaced by the time he was 9 months old. BIG bucks!!!! He was still a great dog. If I was getting a dog from the pound again, I'd get one 1-2 years old (over the puppy stage and hopefully housebroken) and one where they had some background info. I would want to be able to do some temperament testing, too. This would be ideal, but I know is not always possible. Last edited by Deb's Tiny Dogs; 08-21-2005 at 12:16 AM. |

Yea I like the idea of it also. I dont think it would matter to me whether I had background information, if that was the case I could always "rescue" from the newspaper LOL But yes I think its a great thing to do, to give back to the "dog world" so to speak. We have a county pound here.

we have a sheltie/corgi/border collie that we got from the pound 6 years ago when she was a puppy and I wouldnt trade her for anything! If I was old enough to get a job and had one then I would have gotten a puppy from our shelter the other day. She was an awsome dog! short and long with tons of energy. Great tempermant and she would be awsome at agiltiy or flyball! gahh if only I was 15!

We take a few owner turn-ins, but we rescue 90% of our dogs from shelters. Not only because it's an unhappy enviornment for the dog, but also because the shelters here in Southern California have a very high kill rate. Dogs are put to sleep every day. A dog rescued form a shelter, no matter what breed, pruebred or mix, young or old, will be a loyal companion for life. Dogs are smart enough that they will recognize you as their savior and give back to you a hundred times over. And bear in mind, if you take a dog from a shelter/pound you may have just saved her life... |
