Eating Rawhide
Nena is about 8 weeks old and she is teething. She has plenty of toys but it seems she is getting bored of them because everytime I give her the toy when she wants to bite on something she is not suppose she ignores it. I notice she really likes the Rawhide chips and I started giving her more than usual. I wanted to know if it will harm her if I give her alot of the rawhide chips and if you have any suggestions on what else I could use to interest her to bite on. TIA

The kong toys work really, really good!
Because she's a chow/husky mix, she should be able to have rawhides, but instead of the dhips, I'd suggest using the knots, a bit bigger in size. That way, she can chew on them but not be able to swallow large pieces of it. I don't normally suggest giving rawhides until they are 4-5 months old and are starting to lose their baby teeth. At 8 weeks, she's not losing them yet. Get her some squeaky toys...latex as well as material ones. An old sock tied in a knot also works well. Soft toys are the key at this stage of teething/chewing.

I like these things called Flossies. They're shaped like a spring and all my dogs love them. They're totally digestible unlike rawhides. I've been buying on-line through a company called PetEdge. They have outstanding prices on just about everything in their catalog. Except they're not called Flossies; PetEdge calls them bullwrinkles. The only downside is PetEdge has a 50.00 minimum. I go in together with a friend and we usually meet the minimum.
www.petedge.com The other thing I did when Cali was really little was take washcloths, wet them and twist them. Then freeze them. She liked those when she was teething. Last edited by Deb's Tiny Dogs; 08-22-2005 at 02:18 PM. |

Rawhide is basically compressed leather, it doesnt digest well and can cause problems

Raw hide is has to go through a chemical processing to remove the hair from the hide these chemicals are not removed properly so the dog ingests them. Raw hides have no nutritional value and are un-digestible as well as the fact that they cause choking so I would never feed them, stick to raw bones instead!

If she's teething the best thing you can do for her is go to your butcher and get a large knuckle bone (raw) and let her go at it.
