They are! Australian Shepherds actually aren't even from Australian, where the cattle dog is. BIG differences.

As you can see they are two very different breeds...

Australian Shepherd (actually originated in USA)

    Australian Cattle Dog

Aussies (Australian Shepherds) and Heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs) are completely different, as you can see. The Heeler originated from Dingos. The heeler is also a more die-hard herding dog. Today's Aussie is more of a family pet. The heeler only comes in red or blue with tan shadings.....the Aussie comes in a lot of different colors....red merle, blue merle, red, black, ect.

I must reply to circle c who says todays Australian Shepherds are mostly family pets. I currently own one of each, and use them as stock dogs. I must say that Queensland Heelers are much more hard headed, but are very tough. My Australian Shepherds, on the other hand, are quite easy to train. They always seem to read your mind. Anyway, Aussies are still out there working.
