I don't think it's a ready-made diet, just chopped meat, right?
My agility club is sponsored by a company that prepares raw meat and bones. But they are just that, raw meat and bones... packaged. Not a balanced meal. |

Yes, you need to add to your prepared meats & bones. To get some idea of what to add, and how much, check out some of these websites:
http://www.westielovers.com/arf4westies http://www.rawlearning.com http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm http://vetmedicine.about.com/heal/ve...nitri-barf.htm Most sites recommend that you get a book with recipies to help you keep things balanced. The westies page discussed the ARF diet. It seems a bit different - but I didn't have the time today to really do my research on it. I'm just starting to research BARF, so I'm really green on this area. The one that that was consistent: do your research and come up with a definite plan of action before you begin. You want to make sure that you have a balanced diet and that you know what things to adjust for your particular dog as you go.www.weim.net had a forum page discussing just BARF - maybe these people can give you better guidelines? |

HI Barnjess
I have been feeding RAW for years now. Most of those sites posted are great. I have posted them many times before, if you do a search you will find the threads. There has been a lot fo discussion on the subject. To do it right you must do your research and read ! " Give Your Dog a Bone " is a great book to start you with. I feed mostly chicken , chicken necks to be exact. There is no cutting up and the bone is soft and easy to chew. I feed beef once or twice a week, bison when I can get some cheap cuts, lamb on ocassion, turkey and pork once in a while. Add Sea Kelp to the diet, it is rich in nutrients and has some iodine in it. Flax oil or milled flax seed is high in vitamin E and omega 3. Brewers yeast is a natural form of vit. B and excellent for your dog. Add oils such as canola, sunflower and olive , add all of these on rotating days. Add alfalfa pellets of ground alfalfa another high nutrient food. Yogurt and goats milk are great , cow's milk too but goats milk is easier to digest. Fish oil , like cod liver oil can be given to the dog once to twice a week if you are not feeding liver, if you are feeding liver then back off on all fish oils. Feed canned sardines once or twice a week too, the ones in soy oil. Veggies: yams, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes.... etc are awesome, green leafy veggies like spinach and romaine lettuce need to be added for iron and vit A etc. All veggies need to be pulverized through a juicer and then put the juice and pulp into a blender and blend. feed a cup to two cups a day for a large dog. I can go on and on but let me know what else you need to know. www.mountaindogfood.com |
