My 3 yr. old Shepherd-lab cross has been scratching above his eye, and managed to remove the fur about 1/4" above the eyelid. I see that he has now opened a very small area, around 1/8" in dia. His diet has not changed, and he is in good shape, with healthy looking fur, teeth, nails, etc. Last Vet checkup was 100% OK.

I have tried to use a sparring layer of petrolium jelley on the areas around the sore, avoiding it.

Is this a common condition? I see no inflamation, signs of pest/parasite, etc., so I have not taken him into the Vet yet.

Any feedback, experience, etc. would be greatly appreciated

If he's scratching like that, you'll have to take him to the vet. It could be anything bug bites, allergies, behavioral.

Yes I think it's time for another check-up, just to check if everything is OK. Hopefully everything could go well, is it hot in your area? I've never heard of it but dogs maybe able to get hayfever but I'm not entirely sure. Keep us updated on his progress.
