Tis the season... Allergy season that is

I just thought that I would post this since we have been overwhelmed with calls at work with itchy dogs. Now, this is not to take the place of a trip to the vet nor is this a diagnosis. But allergies are very high this year, human and canine. Dogs suffer from inhalant allergies this time of the year. Sometimes it is because of pollen or mold. And a dog that has never shown signs of allergies before can definitely develop them as they age. The earliest environmental allergies can show in a dog is between 2-3 years old. If caught early, an antihistamine can be given to help control the itching. The recommended over the counter medication is Benadryl. You can give 1 mg per pound of body weight up to 3 times a day. Most Benadryl capsules are 25 mg. If your dog weighs less than that, then Children's benadryl is recommended.

Right now though, we are not seeing much relief from antihistamines. Most dogs have to be placed on steriods to help control the itching to prevent more serious problems such as open wounds from over scratching and possible infection. Poor Tanner is jacked up on steriods at the moment.

Dogs that suffer from allergies will continue to suffer until first frost. And it is most likely going to be a yearly problem.
