Drinking Pond Water

Well, my wonderful collie decided to drink the pond water. She has done it before, but I thought that maybe we had corrected it by now. Apparantly not. She had a visit from the "runny monster" last night at 4 AM!!! I really enjoy waking up that early and taking the dog outside...not. Can she get sick from this? Not, just the runs, but actual sick? The pond has three shubunkins (pondfish) and a goldfish.

She seems okay, but I am still worried about bacteria. It's a very well established pond, which means there is a thriving bacteria culture living inside.

I'd keep a close watch on her and if she ever acts out of the ordinary, take her into the vet. The runs are not fn to deal with, hehe.

RC, the fish tend to keep the water clean. There could be a rise in bacteria in the water and that may have caused the runs but if your dog has drank from there before and nothing happened then I doubt it is the water. You should see what my dogs drink from.... YUCK. There is no stopping them either they will drink water where ever they find it even if it is muddy and gross. Dogs are like that.

Keep an eye on the runs and if you have to use some Kaopectate, a childs dose to stop it. I woild worry about your dog getting sick just yet. Watch for signs for listlessness, not wanting to eat or drink, fever. If your dog is exhibiting these signs it is time to go to the vet.

Thanks, I figured that she was fine, but I am getting a little nervous about school, so I guess it would only seem natural for the dog to get sick and not be able to go, lol.

Don't worry, school is fun I WISH I was back in school. ( skipping class, no bills to pay, holidays, etc.... )

Well, I can't skip classes because I will be living there and they'll know where to find me, lol. There are no holidays while I will be there and I still have bills to pay. As a matter of fact, I had to pay all of my Sept. and October bills at once! OUCH!

But I am perfectly okay with that, because:

10-12 hours days/6 days a week and it's all DOGS!
It will be heaven! Paradise! A dream come true!

I just need my dog to hold out until we get there, lol.

Is the pond in an area that pesticide and fertilizers run into it? If so this can harm your dog. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it too much. One of the problems with runoff is that the piosions (sp) can acumulate in your dog making her sicker as she drinks more and they become more concentrated.

She hasn't been sick all day, it's just that I worry too much. Should she get antibiotics just in case?????
