Unhappy Dog is retching and vomiting.

Hi, everyone. I have a chihuahua and he is two years old. Today after playing outside for a bit he came in and started like retching, best as I can describe. It sounded like he was trying to vomit, but couldn't get whatever it was up. This continued for about an hour, he would retch, hack every so often. In the meantime I called the vet and the girl told me to just keep an eye on him, that if he was breathing fine, then there was no need to bring him in, that he might have just gotten something caught in his throat. Well he started throwing up after that. The first time it was visible that it was food, but the last few times it's just been a white, bile like substance. He is acting ok, a little freaked out, but the retching seems to get worse when he gets excited and jumps around. Like when my husband came home from work tonight, Cooper jumped up and greeted him, and immediatly started the hacking again. He doesn't seem to do it when he is lying on the couch with me. I am planning on taking him to the vet first thing, but I wanted to know if anyone might have some sort of clue as to what could have caused this. He is never around other dogs, so I really don't think kennel cough could be it, and there is nothing harmful that he can get into either inside nor out. Also he seems to be eating and drinking normally. Should I look for an emergency vet or just wait and take him in the morning? Thanks for any help! I'm so worried about my little buddy. : (

Yes, he was in our backyard and it's fenced in. Sometimes he digs around and chews on the grass and stuff, so he may have been doing that. He is eating and drinking ok. His nose is cold and wet so I'm assuming that he doesn't have a temp.
