grass eater

My 11 week old lab puppy eats MOUNDS of grass, and doesn't get distracted when you show a toy to him for distraction...need advise! FYI, he is not on a leash in our fenced in back yard....THIS is where he eats piles of grass and mud...any hints on how to get him to stop??!?!?!?!?

Dogs commonly eat grass when their stomach is upset. Some just eat it though. As for the dirt. Many dogs eat dirt. It doesn't seem to really have a harmful effect as long as he still eats his dog food.

Firstly I'm new here so, hello to everyone.

Eating grass is common with dogs, and I frequently get asked "Why does my dog eat grass?"
This is something 2 out of my own 4 dog's participate in.

You need to determine whether your dog is eating the grass to make it's self vomit because of a stomach upset, or whether from eating too much grass has caused this reaction. Some dog's simply just like the taste of grass, others like berries. I have a collie that can pick and eat strawberries from my garden quicker than me.

Some say it's a natural instinct that has been passed down through the generations. As for eating soil, the dog may be lacking in minerals, so it is important to check that your dog is on a good well balanced diet.

Thank you Angela, I will check to see if he has enough minerals...never heard that, but thank you for the tip. I love Collies by the way, they are a great obedient dog. I had one as a child growing up. My husband and I recently chose a Lab becuase of their beauty, structure, build, temperment and lifelong love for their master, along with the fact that they are FUN.
