Olive Oil and Dandruff

Doesn't Olive Oil get rid of dandruff and help make the coat shinier? Tank I think has a dandruff problem cuz he is always scratching, but he doesn't have fleas at all. I'm gonna go look for the Aveeno Oatmeal shampoo for him, but I'd like to know if Olive Oil would help also. Thanks!

Another thing u might want to give your dog is sardines twice a week packed in oil. I feel if your feeding a premiun dog food it takes care of the coat, brushing daily also brings out natural oils. Good dog food is so important than some of the junk we are used to buying thinking we are getting good quality. Learn to read the ingredients. Some good are : Flint River Ranch, Cal Natural, Back to Basics, Innova, Wysong, Strive, Bil Jac Frozen, Canadea, Solid Gold, Eagle Pac, RAW of course is the best to give your dog to have no odor, good skin and coats, must steam veggies also and mix a variety of things not just raw meats, organs and bones.

Always rule out rabbit mite [walking dandruff] it has a posh name too, something like cheyatella, it would make you itch on your wrist and stomach if the dog was infected ??

One of my dogs had a dry coat and itching this summer. I put a whole egg on her food once a day, and she stopped itching in less than a week, and now has a beautiful coat growing in.

You put an egg in the dog food once a day? I have a Chihuahua pup, so would 1 egg be too much? I'll start using the Olive Oil I think and I also bought some Oatmeal/Aloe shampoo that's supposed to help dry itchy skin. Thanks all!

The dog I give the raw egg to is a small Australian Shepherd. There are days that she gets two eggs - sometimes she refuses to eat her food without the raw egg! This occasional extra treat doesn't seem to have any adverse reaction.

If you are worried about 'over-egging' the Chihuahua pup, then I would suggest giving half to the pup and save half in a sealed container for the next day.

I've heard of adding corn oil to their food, so I would suppose that olive oil works in the same way. Just be careful not to overdose....or your poor puppy will get diarrhea....

You could also give a capsule of evening primrose oil - that is good for skin and fur condition (it's what the vet prescribed for Poppy and now she's over the worst of it she's on to human evening primrose oil rather than doggy ones!)

for skin problems i always reconmend 3 things. 1. Dermetrixx ( offered by your Vet) or anything that is primarily an omega 3 fatty acid suppliment for animals. 2. Relief shampoo ( also sold by vets) its an oatmeal shampoo that will help with the scratching. 3. if you aren't using any type of flea control, start ( just b/c you don't think their are, doesn't mean there isn't) I reccoment Frontline Plus. If all this doesn't help than your dog may actually be allergic to something and your vet may want you to change foods.
