Food for healthy skin and coat.

Not sure where this should go since it concerns both the health and grooming section so if this doesn't fit here move it to where you think it fits.
So my 5 month old Toy Poodle Stryder has started to get a real greasy yet dry coat that breaks easily. He has had it for a little while but I just kept thinking it was because he hadnt had a bath in a while, but now I notice that he has a real short part where his harness used to sit because his hair is so breakable. Also after even just a couple days after a bath he looks greasy and gross.

Me and people I work with (I am a dog groomer) think it may be an allergy to the food we feed him. If he wasn’t allergic to it I think it should greatly help his coat because it is made for poodle coats. I am scared to change foods because I think the food he is on is really fighting away tear stains (he is white) but I need to get his coat up to par and I don’t want him eating things he is allergic to. He is getting Royal Canin Mini Poodle formula (recommended by breeder) right now. I have bought Precise Lamb and Rice, this is for sensitive skin and coats and for food allergies. One of the people I work with also has a toy poodle (6 months, from same breeder) who has a gorgeous coat that grows like a weed on the precise (chicken and rice) but he has bad tear stains. I am in the process of switching him over (should be totally changed over by day after tomorrow and am gonna keep him on it for atleast a month and see if I see any differences. If his coat and skin improves (he is pretty itchy though his skin is not red or flaky or anything) but his eyes get bad I may try to do half and half with his new and old food and see if it will maintain the coat yet help the eyes.

I have given him one hot oil treatment to date and I think it helped a little so I am gonna do that every 2-3 weeks till his coat gets better.

So any tips or advise on how to help this? Have any of you tried the precise? Um, ya just anything you can say to help me. I will try to include a pic of him just for fun.

Tear stains is another symptom of an allergic reaction. White dogs don't get tear stains for no reason. It has something to do with disagreement with food, or a certain scent, what you wash the dog's beds with, etc. Many small breeds are prone to allergies.

I believe a good way to go for an allergy prone dog is fish and potato base diet.

i've never tried any other food other than Pro Plan with natural choice canned mixed in..... we had a dog who had really weak hair and to make it stronger we ditluted #1 System's Super Rich Condiotioner. it did wonders with ours coat and for tear stain ( if he gets some) i would reconmmend diammond eye or "Proffessional Pet Products" tear stain remover for younger dogs

THanks you guys. I have never heard of authority before. I am gonna keep trying this precise stuff for a month but if it doesn't help I am gonna give the foods you guys suggested a try. Keep the food recommendations coming as well as any oils, or conditioners, or anything that comes to mind.

I'm a groomer, and I strongly reccomend Fromm dog food, it may be hard to find, but it is a wonderful brand! I would also consider a supplement for coats, ask your groomer what s/he reccomends for your individual dog!

I have never heard of Fromm. I would ask my groomer about suppplements but she doesn't know anything about them b/c my groomer is me. I am a proffesional groomer (who obviously can't spell) I am 18 and have been grooming for just over a yr. I am asking all the rest of the groomers I work with about what they suggest but want as many different thoughts and ideas as I can get. What kind of supplements do you use or would recomend?

If you are looking for a food product for skin and coat, there is only one. AvoDerm.. the derm is for dermatologica (skin and coat). There is avocado products in it to make coats soft, shiny, etc.

My dogs coats are so soft and people always ask if they have just had a bath.. when they haven't in over a year.
