Pekingese losing hair

I have a pek who had puppies in June and is now, or I should say has been, losing hair. Her hair is getting thinner and thinner but no bald spots just really thin. Does anyone have any advice what to do or what could be causing this. She is not itching and has no spots I have checked her skin for irritation. Im at a lose.

When Poppy had her skin/fur loss problem the vet said she looked like a bitch that had whelped a litter of puppies. She fur was extremely thin, but no bald spots just like you described. They thought it was to do with her hormones and a skin infection which made it worse for Poppy. She is on Efavet which is evening primrose for dogs but once she's finished these she can go on to ordinary evening primrose capsules for humans. It took about 6 weeks to get her fur looking better.

If coming into a heat and not spayed she will totally change coats loose alot of hair and some go nearly bald, it is the hormine change of the heat 21 day cycle.

Get your pet spayed to be healthier not put up with this nonsense for it does effect dogs so much to hair looss, listlessness, not caring to eat and just a complete change. Do they get cramps nobody knows if has not been studied that far, but I would say so as they sure change. I know for I go through this time after time. Just kept Sasha from getting bred kept kennled left out daily when boys where inside. She lost her gorgeous coat on legs, chest , face, etc.
Now she is coming back outta heat. It is a pain but if u want to breed this goes with the territory.

Estrus Cycle is divided into 4 groups
  • Anestrusis the rest time between heats.
  • Proestrus is the first days of heat, swelling of the vulva , start of blood , the follicles containing the eggs mature over a few to nine days. Fertilization can not happen at this stage. Ovulation testing is recommended at the end of this stage, contact your Vet for a vaginal cytology or contact Camelot Farms, they have a new Ovulation test on the market.
  • Esterus or standing heat is when the female will accept the male. Her blood will turn to a lighter shade of red or straw colored. She will exhibit behavior like lifting her tail rubbing her rear end against objects and moving her rear end sideways. This behavior is called flagging. To test if she is flagging, rub your palm down her back to the base of her tail. If she lifts her rear end up in the air she is flagging. Ovulation occurs during this 4-7 day flagging stage. If you are going to breed do it within the 4-7 days. ( Average bitch ovulates on Day 11 of her heat cycle ) Breeding on days 10 12 14 or Larger breeds may be best to breed 8 10 12
  • Metestrus is the stage that readies the uterus for pregnancy. If fertilization does occur the fertilized eggs take up to a week before they attach themselves to the uterine wall.
If fertilization does not occurs this stage reverts back to anestrus.
