What do you think of Pitbulls

I have one and everyone ask me "why a pitbull?" I always thought the behavior of a pitbull was based on there up bringing. I know natural they are aggressive but they have great potential to become great family dogs. What do you think of them?

They are great looking, extremely powerful dogs that require diligent owners. I know of some real trouble makers (my rotti was attacked when she was just a pup) but it was the owners that I hold responsible.

I would definately recommend that you spay/neuter them early especially since there is a pitbull surplus in shelters & rescues.

I would also recommend early socialization (Puppy socials are great) to teach these dogs that play is more fun than aggression. Also try to teach the dog that the world is a wonderful , fun place by experienced as many new strange things early on so they do not become fear biters.

Here is what a puppy social is. It is a safe play group. You can do them at dog owner's home (works great if you know lots of other puppy owners) or you can contact Doggy daycares (boarding facilities) who often have them.

Here, you pay so much per visit and the pups get to run around inside and play. I know lots of owners of "dangerous" breeds (pitts, rottis, etc) that take their dogs to doggie daycare once a month of 1/2 a day so they can play.

I socialize the heck out of any new puppy I get. I take them everywhere with me and expose them to as many new sites and sounds as I can think of. Like Dax said with one the of so-called dangerous breeds, all the more so. Play groups are a blast!

There really aren't any play groups in NC. Seriously I mean if there is I can't find them.

Just start by having your pup vaccinated. Then take him to parks where there are lots of ppl. If there are any dog training school, go check it out. They usually have puppy socialization classes for minimal cost. (It was like $5 CAD per session)

There are alot of people on this forum that own pitbulls. They are a beautiful dog and with the right training would be a great house pet. I have a friend at work who has been educating me on the American Staffordshire Terrier. He has owned 3 of them and wants to have another one soon.
